At HypeDrop, we're always celebrating pieces that helped redefine streetwear. Amongst those is one of the most iconic and important sneakers in footwear history - the Nike Air Max 1!

Designed by Tinker Hatfield and originally released in 1987, the Nike Air Max 1 was an immediate game changer thanks to its Air cushioning tech. The tech wasn’t a new thing within the Nike company, as several sneaker models already had them buried inside the midsole. But what the Air Max 1 did different was uncover that part of the midsole and have it visible for all to see.

Why did it get popular? Not only did they look dope, but the Nike’s Air cushioning tech allowed people to see how they worked. It offered athletes and sports people an extra layer of comfort and support, with the proof on show.

When the sneaker first dropped, it quickly became a favorite among sneakerheads thanks to its blend of style, cutting-edge tech and performance – not to mention the bold colorways. The original design featured a mesh upper with leather overlays and the game-changing visible Air unit in the sole. Since its debut in 1987, Nike has released hundreds of Air Max 1 colorways, including classics like "University Red" and "OG White/Varsity Red," which remain iconic staples for collectors even today.

The Air Max 1 was such a hit for Nike that it paved the way for future models like the Air Max 90 and Air Max 95, each upping the game in both performance and style.

Over the years, the Air Max 1 has been reissued countless times, whether through celebrity collaborations or special edition releases, cementing its status as a sneaker icon. Big-name partnerships with brands and designers like Atmos, Patta and Sacai have kept the Air Max 1 relevant in today’s sneaker culture. But it’s more than just a shoe - it’s a cultural phenomenon. The Air Max 1 and its signature visible Air unit have become synonymous with the sneakerhead movement and remain some of the most recognizable symbols in sneaker history.

The Air Max 1 transformed Nike into a global powerhouse and completely changed the way people thought about sneakers. What was once seen as just performance gear for sports evolved into a cultural symbol and a wardrobe essential, thanks to the Air Max 1’s influence.

After nearly four decades, the Air Max 1 continues its celebrated status as one of the most beloved sneakers in the world.
